A deep study of a few former slaves in western Africa, told through correspondence, maps, photos, and the peanut trade. Highly recommended!
I really enjoyed the details and humor that Hirsch put into writing this memoir. I read straight through chapter 12 (Blow Out). Then I skipped to the films I wanted to know more about and finally, finishing the last 50 pages.
It has been said that the true art form in Hollywood is not making pictures; it's making the deal. I believe, however, that the true art form in Hollywood is humiliating people.

Checked this out to compare chapters on Theda Bara and Gene Gauntier, who are both in the new First Women of Hollywood book. The latter is less academic, with less photos, too.

When she "left," it was as if he had experienced a grievous personal loss.
